March, 1968
Scroll/document Prague Spring was what the reform ideas to make Czech life better became known as. The three main changes that Alexander Dubcek wanted to inflict were to make Czechoslovakia more democratic, relax censorship for more freedom of speech, and new political parties. In the end, Dubcek was arrested and Czechoslovakia stayed a communist country under the influence of the Soviets. |

Map showing the Iron Curtain The Iron Curtain wasn’t an actual physical barrier or border, it was simply a line on the map. The Iron Curtain was the name given to the boundary that divided Europe into two areas: countries united under the Warsaw Pact and NATO countries.The term iron curtain was used as a metaphor for firm separation dates back at least as far as the early 1800’s. |
1961-1989
Artifact: A piece of the Berlin Wall The Berlin Wall was built to keep people that lived in East Berlin in. West Berlin was free and non-communist but east Berlin wasn’t. The East feared that their people, especially people like doctors and teachers, would start leaving and go the the West for a better life, so overnight they threw up a wall to keep their people in. Families were separated, people couldn’t get to their jobs or normal shops anymore. There were many escape attempts and some people make it to West Berlin but overtime the wall got bigger and more advanced making escaping near impossible. |
